I've never thought that statement was a lie. Rather,
I think they've chosen their words very carefully. If you are BYU, the relevant population is the 34,000 students. How many requests or complaints does the school receive from students about the lack of caffeinated beverages? It might easily be such a low number that they can say there is no "demand." And as other have noted, I'm sure BYU has no interest in conducting a survey to determine preference.

And while I love Dr Pepper and consumed way too many energy drinks while working, I'm fine with BYU not selling them on campus. First, soda, of course, is already bad enough. Adding caffeine, with its minor withdrawal symptoms if you stop drinking them (among other issues such as effect on sleep), makes it a pretty poor health choice. Throw in the fact that I think most (?) LDS parents don't give their kids caffeine soda growing up and I'm fine with BYU not providing such a poor health choice to those kids when they arrive on campus.

All that said, it wouldn't bother me in the least if BYU sold Coke and Dr Pepper on campus. As I said, I've drank more than my fair share (although I rarely drinking soda now). Frankly, I think its a silly issue and I find it slightly amusing that an adult can get all worked up over what soda BYU sells on campus and accuse them of lying about the issue. I do agree, however, that rather than playing word games, it would be better for BYU to simply state something to the effect that, "while caffeinated sodas like Coke are not against the laws of the Church, BYU attempts, as much as possible, to provide healthy choices for its students and therefore does not sell caffeinated soda on campus."
