BYU vs San Francisco II
I had to watch this game slightly delayed since I was not landing in St. George until 8:40. Obviously the one thing you can say immediately about this game is that BYU, and especially Nick Emery, was knocking down a lot of shots. BYU shot 57% from the field and 63% from the arc. Anytime you hit 17 threes you are going to be on the plus side of the scoring table.

Kaufusi started tonight and played pretty well. He was very aggressive on the boards and ended up with a double-double. He still looks raw around the basket but he was giving it a maximum effort. The question I have is why did Austin only get one minute in the game. Was he hurt? Or is Dave Rose simply deciding at this point in the season that he has to find out what Kaufusi can do and look towards next year.

I know a couple of games ago a lot of people got excited for Jakob Hartsock because he was able to knock down a few three pointers but that has been his highlight for the season. He is slow on defense and puts other defenders in a bad spot when he gets beat. Unless something drastically improves in his game I don’t see him getting many minutes next season and he may be tempted to join his brother at UVU.

It is hard to find fault with a team that scores 114 points in a college game and wins by 25 but there were some shortcomings out there again tonight. Once again Watson proved that BYU struggles against a quick point guard and he was able to penetrate at will. The only guard that had any success in staying in front of him was Chatman. Speaking of Chatman, I was glad to see him get more minutes and he looked to be playing with more confidence tonight.

Collinsworth had a normal game for him and Fischer was solid. Since he started putting the ball on the floor this season he has become a much better player. Davis did not look that good tonight and I think that Rose is trying to motivate him on defense and to take stronger shots at the rim because he kept him on a short leash most of the night.

I am going to go back to our lack of a true point guard. Emery is someone that many suggest assuming that role next season but his passing will have to get a lot sharper. He makes to many lazy passes and then throws some wild cross-court passes. As the point guard his job will be to control the offense and jacking up quick three pointers, no matter how hot you might be, can be a liability in many games. I still think Rose might consider looking for a JC point guard. He has the Toolson and Calvert scholarships in his pocket.

Another number that surprised me was the Dons got 16 offensive rebounds and that is way to many to give up. It did not burn the Cougars tonight but against a better team it will bite them. But in the end this was a laugher and BYU needed one of those. Hopefully they will get two more on the road and come home to finish the regular season strong.

Thought Emery had some fantastic passes & I'm good with seniors playing less. This is college ball not high school (SouthernBlueBlood, Feb 12, 2016 at 6:59am)
