BYU vs Santa Clara II
I really debated whether to make any comments about this game. Santa Clara is just a bad basketball team. They have one legitimate scorer in Brownridge and the rest of the team nobody you would want on the BYU team. Our BYUTV announcers kept saying how young they were but that is akin to saying Emery and Seljaas are also young. They are both ahead of the “young” players at Santa Clara.

Dave Rose did a nice job switching between man-to-man and the 1-3-1 zone defense. It kept the Broncos off balance and forced Brownridge to give up the ball more than he normally would.

Nick Emery had another great game. He is shooting lights out right now but the best number for him today was zero turnovers. The entire BYU guard line played a good game and controlled the tempo from the beginning of the game.

Kaufusi showed his continued improvement and I think a lot of it has to do with confidence. The best move he made of the game was the spin move and then he lost the ball out of bounds. He is the best rim protector that BYU has on the roster. I am also glad to see Chatman getting more minutes. He will be called upon later in the season and next season so this experience will only serve the team in the future.

Hartsock did nothing to dispel my thought that he is not going to play at this level. He cannot play defense and has shown no inclination to go inside to score. Braiden Shaw made a small appearance and while I will not say he cannot contribute in the future you do have to wonder where his minutes will come. He is a freshman but next season Mika will be sophomore, Kaufusi a junior, Dastrup a freshman and Childs a freshman. In the next three seasons I don’t see him getting any significant minutes and he may decide on his own to play somewhere else.

We now move on to a two game series with San Diego they will be described as a young team as well with only two seniors and two juniors. They also lack any serious talent.
