Fireside Report (Repost for the morning crowd).
There were four speakers at the fireside in Eagle, ID. Handsome Tanielu, Ben Cahoon, Tanner Mangum, and Kalani Sitake.

Handsome said that when he was born his mother said, "He's so handsome" and that's how he received his name. He also said that his dad has been jealous of him ever since. He said that he's always been a momma's boy but how his mother really helped and influenced his future. He shared a great story about living in Hawaii and that on his island people started dumping a lot of trash onto a beach and it became quite an eyesore. Right before his mission there was a small tsunami that hit his island and washed all the trash away and he was amazed at how clean the beach had become. He also said that his island is very dry and that there is a mountain on his island but it is always brown and rather ugly looking. Also right before his mission, a fire started on the mountain and burned most of the dry ugly looking vegetation away. A short while later though the mountain became green and beautiful as new vegetation grew. He then related that to how through the ordinances of water and fire (baptism and the holy ghost) we can become clean and renewed. He also said that his mom had a saying growing up that you either need to "hold to the rod" or you will be hit by the rod. He was very funny.

Coach Cahoon spoke next. He shared a great story about how he lasted in the NFL 2.5 days. When he went to the first training camp at the CFL he was amazed at the freak athletes he was competing against for a roster spot and he really started doubting himself. The night before the final cuts were to be made he couldn't sleep because he was so nervous. He opening the playbook to a section he never looked at before tited "How to be Successful". There were 11 bullet points but bullet point #6 jumped out at him. It read, "Consistency is more important than greatness." At that point he had a glimmer of hope that he made the team because he knew he was consistent. He shared a lot of insights about how the doing the small and simple things everyday will ultimately lead to greatness. He referenced the article in the BYU Magazine written by Ed Eyestone talking about how Kyle Perry became a sub 4 minute runner. http://magazine.byu.edu/article/run-like-a-horse/ It was about sweating the small stuff. Coach Cahoon shared this story with the receivers during Spring Camp and they committed to a list of small things to work on over the summer. I enjoyed Coach Cahoon's talk the most.

Tanner Mangum spoke next and to be honest with you I felt like his talk wandered a little. I will tell you that he expressed how hard it is to live under a microscope by being a successful BYU quarterback and how hard it can be spiritually when others are placing you on a pedestal. He said he's made some mistakes recently because he's bought into those thoughts of feelings but now he's grounded himself back into the basics of prayer and scripture reading. He talked about how we all make mistakes and all need the atonement of Jesus Christ.

Finally, Coach Sitake spoke. He said a lot of the same things he has said at other firesides (i.e. how the interview went with Tom Holmoe, etc.). He said that God doesn't care about football. If God did care about football then BYU would win the National Championship every year. He made the joke that God only cared about BYU football in 1984. I guess Ty Detmer has heard Kalani say that because now he's been going around telling everyone that God only cares about Ty because he's the only one that has won a Heisman trophy.

Kalani shared a story of when he was in high school and he was starting to get a lot of attention from colleges that he became arrogant. One night he decided he was going to show his dad that he was a man and he'd purposefully disobey his father to prove this point. He went out with his friends and his dad told him to be home by 11 PM. He decided to not come home until 11:15 PM to prove this point. He said he wanted to be just late enough to prove his point without his dad killing him. When he came home his dad was waiting for him, stood up, walked over and gave him a hug and told him he loved him. After Kalani changed his clothes he wanted to check on his father to see if he was okay. He found his father in his room praying. He said that experience changed him and took all the arrogance away from him.

It was a great night.
