Received the summer 2016 BYU Magazine in the mail. Doesn't appear to be an online version to link to, but there's an article titled "A Handy Way to Rep the Y." Article opens as follows:
"Howzit. Hang loose. All clear. Welcome. Thanks. The Hawaiian-born shaka, a relaxed fist with thumb and pinkie extended, has evolved to signal a plethora of positive messages. Now the shaka takes on another meaning: Go Cougars! For the BYU family, this amalgam of the spirit of the Y and the spirit of aloha lets everyone know where your heart is.
"Use it 'whenever you want to represent the Y,' says head coach Kilani Sitake... 'To me, it makes a lot of sense. It's the Y sign in sign language. It fits perfectly.'
Article then goes on to recount the most popular of the shaka origin stories (Hamana Kalili version) and ends with a quote from Tuiaki endorsing it as well.
Some here won't like this, and I'm sure some curmudgeons in the stands won't join in, but I personally like it and am glad it's catching on and getting promoted by the school.
Go cougs! ,,,/ (Article says to do that in text. )
Edit: There's supposed to be a backslash too, but it gets removed I post. Apparently, no backslashes allowed on CB.
