The structure you advocate will ultimately freeze out - in fact has frozen out - non P5 programs. This becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Every slot gets filled every year by P5 programs. The recruiting gap becomes insurmountable. There has to be a way in for these programs. We should never forget how hard it is to rise up and be competitive when you are on the outside. One slot out of 8 is a small price to pay to keep the playing field a bit level. If we are 11-1 and aren't B12 champs - well we had a much easier shot than we do today.
