I spent a significant amount of time today with a local sports personality all of us know. Since it was for work, I won't say who.
Anyways, I asked him if he thought BYU was getting into the Big 12. He said he was certain they were not.
I asked him how he came to this conclusion.
He then, somewhat condescendingly, asked what I thought the most important factor is in the realignment. I replied, "money". He said, "kind of. It's about tv market more than anything." He then said BYU doesn't bring the money or the tv market Houston or the Florida schools bring.
I kindly disagreed and told him BYU unequivocally brings the most revenue and brings the largest media market combining TV and digital viewership. And if money was the biggest factor, then that's the best thing for BYU because they have the strongest position with it.
He said he didn't think the digital market mattered much nor the football. He said BYUs strong football is actually a negative. He thinks the Big 12 wants cupcakes.
This is a prominent local media member. I learned today that even though they have a very definitive way of speaking about the topic, they sincerely aren't very in tune with it.
End story.
