They crushed us, 57-28 in one of the most humiliating defeats in rivalry history. I've always wondered why they made us look so silly. (I was too young to remember.)
This was back in the days when BYU owned the rivalry for the most part and curb-stomped Utah pretty much every season. So it's weird that they beat us soundly during our supposed glory years in the 80's. I know BYU did not have a great team in 1988, but they were still pretty good. They finished 9-4 and beat Colorado in the Freedom Bowl and also creamed Texas that year, 47-6. Did BYU just not take Utah seriously enough? I know they had Scott Mitchell that season who was a stud and played several years in the NFL, while we kept alternating between Sean Covey and a freshman, wet behind the ears, Ty Detmer. So I'm wondering if this was one of the rare instances where Utah had superior quarterback play which helped them cruise to an easy victory.
By the way, I'm well aware that we returned the favor a year later in Provo with a 70-31 butt whooping of the yewts. I wish I could have witnessed that live, although I do think I have seen an old VHS recording of it.
