There was a vey old comic strip by Pop Momand that was titled "keeping up with the Joneses." Historically there really was a Jones family in New York City and the saying came from their status in the inner circle of New York elites at that time (1850s until WWI?). Their daughter became a famous author (Edith Wharton).
