Edwards and Scovil had a future Heisman runner-up and Super Bowl MVP on their hands in the early 80s. Rather than develop him they decided to have Tom Holmoe teach him the DB position. Scovil, who was a proven offensive coordinator, told Young he would never be BYU's starting QB. It took Ted Tollner to notice how driven Steve was to convince Lavell to give him another look. So while great coaches know a lot more than we do, it doesn't mean they don't make boneheaded mistakes from time to time. BYU coaches knew Young was a heck of an athlete, but they didn't try to develop his passing skills.
Hill may be the best QB for BYU right now. But if so, it isn't because coaches are always accurate judges of talent.
