Yep, it was that bad 17 years ago
I had just completed a horrendous year of long hours at work and attempted to celebrate the end of the project by taking my family to Disneyland one day over Christmas break.

We got to the castle somehow... maybe out of some pathetic desire to make this a happy moment when I really needed one. But you literally could not take two steps without having to get out of someone's way from the front gate to the castle. I am not claustrophobic, but I was starting to freak out a little bit.

My two oldest were seven and four. I crouched down and said, "There are too many people here today to enjoy any rides. I will make you a deal. If you agree to leave now, I will get season passes, and we can come back after school during the week once a month." They conferred and agreed it was a good deal. We serpentined back to Main Street and got our season passes which we kept for the next five years and grew to love Disneyland.

Obviously, it helped to live 50 minutes from the park, but I would never even consider going near that place during Christmas break.
