About Payton Dastrup
I read some fairly negative reviews of him (Hadow etc.) so I went back watched him specifically. This is how I saw it.

First the good. Dastrup is the most skilled offensive big BYU has had in a long time. His awareness on the court was really refreshing. I don't know how many teams will go zone against us, but this guy knows how to beat a zone. His movement without the ball-- from high post to low post to baseline was so good. He knows to make his moves when the defenders are looking away.

Even better, he knows where he wants to go with the ball when he gets it. He has really good ball skills for a big (how many of our bigs struggle just to catch the ball?). The ball is in and out of his hands so fast it completely neuters a zone. That pass out to Leifson about 10 minutes into the second half was a thing of beauty.

Also-- an up and under move!!!! When was the last time I saw a BYU big who has an up and under move? Mikelli Wesley?

Offensively Dastrup reminds me a lot of Arvydas Sabonis-- that is a huge compliment.

Now the not so good-- Dastrup looks like he's put on about 35 pounds since high school-- all in his upper body. He doesn't look like he's lost any weight since being home.

What everyone is calling mission legs is really what any player would go through if you put a heavy vest on them. He needs to drop about 15 in my opinion while strengthening his legs. This may take several more months. He can still be effective until then, but in limited minutes.

His defense needs some real help. He looks like he has been taught to avoid foul trouble. In his current roll, he needs to be ready to foul people and use that big body to push guys around. Good news is that this type of defense is much easier to learn than all of those offensive skills mentioned above.

I am really excited about this guy! He can actually play the high post! He passes brilliantly and he can be trusted with an entry pass! Also, my guess is that BYUs 3 point percentage will go up with this guy on the floor kicking the ball out to open shooters.
