Siesmic shifts in revenue in college sports with the demise of the current ESPN/Fox Sports funding model, cord cutters and over the top programming
Grant of rights expiring and signficant shifts in p5 league make up possible
Downward trend in college sports attendance
Player compensation and stipends in play, P5 flexing its muscles with NCAA
It will be interesting to see where things stand over the next 10-15 years. I don't count BYU out one bit.
So, while football hasn't been as revolutionary recently as they were in the 80's, I think overall BYU sports is in decent shape.
Vast majority of games on national TV
ESPN contract and money
Top ranked sports (Soccer, Rugby, V-ball, some track and cross country, baseball)
Football and Basketball still very much in the national conversation
P5 equivalent for most leagues (better than the WAC/MWC days)
Football and basketball have the potential to have break out years, we are better than the perennial bottom half of the P5
BYU broadcasting and BYUTV a big success
Internet gives us access to our teams and info on them
Recognized rabid fan base
Able and willing to shift with changing dynamics in the college sports world
So while there are many ways BYU sports can improve, I am optimistic about BYU's future in sports.
