His story shows incredible foresight and incredible timing
You have to admit that he was born with a lot of gifts. You don't get the combination of athleticism, photographic memory, and work ethic in very many people.

He was an excellent one dimensional running QB and probably would have been a 4 year starter at North Carolina and would have been a great college quarterback. At the same time, he was very fortunate that A) LaVell got him to come on the recruiting trip without a scholarship offer, B) that a scholarship opened up moments before he met with Steve, and C) that Steve saw the opportunity of BYU and to develop his passing skills. There's no way he becomes the great NFL quarterback he was without the coaching, mentoring by McMahon, and opportunity to throw at BYU.

I was also amazed at his connections. He went out with Marie Osmond, the runner up to Miss Universe (before he was a star), Jim McMahon talked to him as an 8th stringer, was tutored by an apostle, was coached by Mike Holmgren, was tight knit with several future pro-bowlers. It's almost like he was supposed to do what he did.
