I think this depends on which portion of the fanbase you are referring to. I

think that Utah-based fans -- either those who live there or those who grew up there and/or have lots of utes in their families -- absolutely feel this way. But I think that for the non-Utah fan base, this factor is much less significant than most Utah-based fans recognize. And there are a lot of BYU fans who aren't from Utah.
