Richie was a very talented athlete and extremely competitive. Our senior year, my high school was playing his in the district tourney with a State playoff berth on the line. We slowly built a 16 point lead and as the game became out of reach our student section began to chant "Ri-chie Ri-chie" the way UNLV does the "Re-bels" chant.
He had done nothing to warrant our mocking other than being their best and most intense player. It was at that point that Richie took over the game scoring 16 unanswered points. After hitting a shot to tie things up, he jogged back down the court with his finger over his lips making the "shhhh" sign towards our student section as we stood there in stunned shock. 😂
The last time I spoke with Richie was at a golf course a couple years ago and I was struck by how proud he was telling me about his son. He was always kind to me. RIP, brother.
