I was browsing heisman.com and found this interesting list. Heisman finalists were first officially recorded in 1982 because that's the first year they were invited to NYC for the ceremony. I updated it to include this year:
6. Which schools have had the most Heisman finalists?
Since 1982, here are the schools that have had the most players invited to New York for the Heisman ceremony:
Miami -- 9
Oklahoma -- 8
Alabama, Florida -- 7
BYU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Stanford, USC -- 5
Florida State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Texas -- 4
I thought this was pretty cool and did a little extra research, going back to 1979 and counting the top five Heisman vote-getters as "finalists."
Most Heisman "finalists" from 1979-1991:
(Yes, I cherry-picked those years, and I can't guarantee there aren't any errors.)
BYU -- 8
Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh -- 4
Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio St., USC -- 3
Boston College, Colorado, Holy Cross (!), Houston, Michigan St., Oklahoma, West Virginia -- 2
Several others, including Florida, Florida St., Stanford, UCLA, Washington -- 1
BYU's total included Wilson, McMahon (twice), Young, Bosco (twice), and Detmer (twice).
If the time period is further narrowed down to 1979-85, BYU had six finalists in seven years!
As I said, I picked a time span that favors BYU. And critics will say that BYU had a weaker schedule than the schools from power conferences, which is true.
But in the end, that's a pretty remarkable run for BYU QBs! And they were selected by a national group of Heisman voters, most of whom would've been from the East Coast. Not exactly a group that would've been easy to impress.
