Dating with no car can be a joke
The post about whether you need to have a car at BYU made me remember something that wasn't funny to me at the time . . .

As a freshman with no car, I started dating a girl I had dated previously in high school. She was a year older than me -- we had dated through most of my junior year of high school but it hadn't really lasted when she went away to BYU the next year. When I started at BYU we started going out again, but we were both dating other people too.

She and I made plans to go out after an event where she was performing, but she fell during the event and had to be taken to the student health center for x-rays. I found out only after the event was over that she had been taken there, so I headed over to see how she was . . . on my mountain bike. No cell phones in those days.

When I got there, I found out that the guy who drove her to the health center was a "friend" of hers who had also been performing in the event. He, unlike me, was not a freshman and had a car. I sat down on a chair in the same general area as him and we both waited for her to complete her x-rays. I think I told him I would wait for her but he said he was going to wait as well.

I could have left, but in my mind I had a date with her that night and I wasn't going to leave her there, injured, without having talked with her, even with some other guy hanging around. So I stuck around until she finished and the doctor had wrapped her ankle (not broken).

After that she came out and saw us two guys. She was tired and in pain, and I clearly wasn't going to take her home on my bike, so the other guy offered to drive her home. What could I say? She said she'd call me later and I took off on my bike toward my apartment as they made their way to his car.

The kicker was when I had to stop my bike at a crosswalk for some pedestrians and the car with the two of them pulled up right next to me. The whole thing was like an awkward 80s movie
