Why would anyone with the chops to be an attorney choose teaching today? Obviously there are some reason... but
the majority of men wouldn't consider it. And the majority of women today with the chops to be an attorney, wouldn't find the benefits of teaching to be great enough to entice them into the teaching profession.

28 years ago (when the women spoken about in the OP joined the work force) most women didn't have the kinds of option an 18 yr old girl has today. Isn't it likely that this same women (if she were 18 years old today) would choose a career other than teaching?

It's these talented women that the teaching field is missing out on today. Certainly, plenty of talented women choose teaching today.... but not enough. And money (compared to other alternatives available to them) and control over their class are the two most often reported reasons why.
