You can argue that if they paid a huge amount more, then maybe they would end up working still, but in Utah it is very common for a woman to decide to be a teacher till she has her first baby. That is what happened with my wife.
Also, if you paid more, then some more men would go into teaching as well.
But I don't think the pay is directly causing the turnover like the article tries to imply. But maybe a bit indirectly.
