like I did in 1985 when BYU was playing Air Force in football. It was the only time I can remember (before & since) that I would not have minded if BYU had lost that game. We won the national championship the year before but had already lost to UCLA early in the year & had a complete meltdown at UTEP (worst BYU loss ever) a couple of weeks before playing Air Force. Air Force was undefeated and highly ranked and it was a mid November game. I was hoping that a WAC team might have another chance at a national championship. We ended up winning that game (Robbie Bosco was booed in the 1st half at home after giving up 2 pick 6's). It really didn't help BYU that much & we ended up losing to Ohio St. in the Citrus Bowl (Thanks Vai). With a little WAC pride back then, I just wish Air Force would have had a chance to make more noise. I think they beat Texas in the bowl game. They ended with just the one loss to us & I always liked Fisher DeBerry.
So last night I was thinking that for the WCC and national chatter it would have been nice to have Gonzaga win. It doesn't really affect our chances to get it - we still have to win the conf. tourney. It's been a rough year - we lost to UVU at home for heaven's sakes. Gonzaga was a great win and 1st time the Coogs have won against the #1 team and all, but it hurts the whole little guys versus the P-5's argument. It's always fun to cheer for the underdogs & it was great having a non-P5 at the top of the rankings. If it had been the conference tournament and getting into the NCAA's on the line it is a totally different story, but after the inconsistent year we have had it would have been okay with me if the Zags had won and stayed at #1. Only the 2nd time I have felt this way - 32 years apart. Maybe we catch lightning twice and advance to the NCAA's - GO COOGS!
