Yeah it didn't make it to most theaters -- was a smaller budget.
Obviously popularity isn't a component of the calculus that determines what makes something good or not. Otherwise the Toyota Camry would be a better car than a Ferrari. So I don't think the size of the release is an issue here. Their peers simply thought they'd made the best film of the year.
