Because of the clear path foul, the only way it is effective is if you are in front of the offensive player. The problem with the strategy is that you're asking your players to weigh the context of the situation (e.g. "Am I in position to commit the foul without it being a clear-path?", and "Are they in the penalty?") in a split second before committing the foul. Too many times, the Jazz have committed the foul intentionally resulting in free throws and some times free throws and the ball for the other team. It's just dumb. I'd rather have the Jazz attempt to defend the guy from behind. I still favor fouling to prevent a momentum shifting highlight, but I'd rather it be while preventing the guy from scoring than at mid court.
