What if BYU charged students an extra $500-1000 a year and gave it to athletics?
Of course I'm not advocating this... exactly... plus I know it would never happen, because the brethren are never going to approve it. But a guy can dream.

I paid my own way for school, room and board and I would have paid an extra $4000 for my inexpensive BYU education if that meant BYU athletics were flush with cash and could afford all the bells and whistles. Of course I'm a pretty big fan and most poor students likely don't all feel this way, but it would still be the greatest price in education even with the increase.

I figure with close to 30000 students that means an extra $15-30 million a year, depending on what additional tuition is added. 10 Years of that and we are getting on par with UCLA and Alabama. BYU doesn't divulge finances but Utah paid 36 million for their indoor basketball facility. We could make a lot of great hires and build a lot of cool stuff with an extra 30 million a year.

Coach Lamb thinking of leaving? Nothing a quick half mil won't fix.
Need some great assistant basketball coaches? We only pay for the best.
Need to expand and beautify the stadium, smith field house or RB? Bam, we'll do one big project every other year.

Maybe sweeten the pot by first using the funds to build a state of the art student fitness facilities and improve on what we have. For the most physically active student body in the world they deserve the best. If some of the athletic improvements impact the students day to day extra cost would likely feel easier to swallow.

The more I think about the more it makes sense. In fact maybe we should make tuition $2000 more a year
