Not the posters, but the rule makers, the mods, the operators of the board. Many of us have posted things that have been censored and deleted. Some of us have received suspensions for some pretty minor things. This alone is weird. Some good comes out of it, but its weird and often unnecessary.
While the trib tries to stretch a certain amount of controversy out of a non news story where the details are questionable, i think that CB brought this on itself. We all know that if someone posts something critical or negative or controversial that it can and does get deleted. All the time. So why CB even tries to defend itself against allegations that it censors and severely moderates its users more so than is considered normal or healthy or even right....i dont get it.
Its this aspect of BYU culture...the over moderation, the excessive rules, the overbearing honor code police, the self righteousness, that I personally could do with out. I'm proud of BYU and ive loved it all my life, but some criticisms it gets are sometimes warranted and I hope some things finally change. So if it takes a major publication calling out a message board for a message board to look at itself I think its all good. But I dont get the sense that the higherups at CB are self aware enough to make changes, seems like the response is deny, debate, explain, were right, your wrong, move on and never change...
ps i love parts of cb. I love that i received tips on home mortgages and lawn mower repair recently. Love the sports talk and the news and interesting topics....but i have had moments where i felt like i was in first grade getting a suspension for being negative or making a joke...and I have to roll my eyes and remember that its cougarboard i'm dealing with...Wish it were better that way. We'll see if this post even lasts. lol.
