Currently at an industry convention. Just had a presentation today about this...
Full automation is still a ways off. Difficult to implement while most vehicles are still controlled by a driver.
The first step is going to be cars talking to each other. The estimate presented today was that about 90% of US vehicles will be communicating (receiving and sending data) in some way by 2030. Once the communications are there the automation will be easier to implement.
