Expensive on air talent that no one cares about is expendable.
Live sports are not.
The hosts of these shows are inconsequential. No one cares about them anymore. No reason to pay them like celebrities when you can swap them out with cheap replacement level anchors and no one will notice or care. It's an easy fix for espn as they look for ways to build a moat around their live sports core business.
