I get that he wanted the chance to be a starter again but he had a good situation with the 49ers who gave him a 5 year deal with the intention that he will finish out his career there and possibly come back and be a coach.

Had he stayed on another year, he probably would've been the fulltime starter as Steve Young got knocked out for the season with what ended up being a career ending concussion. The Niners in 1999 were still a team loaded with veteran talent that included Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens and Detmer knew Steve Marriuci's offense better than anyone. The Niners also could've possibly avoided a catastrophic season given themselves an outside chance of making the playoffs. Oh well, what might've been.
