You might find the Newark/Fremont area to be cheaper. It's across a bridge, but
you pretty much drop right into Palo Alto. I think it's a $5 toll going westbound.
Or up near the San Francisco airport might be more affordable just due to the numbers of rooms, but that's a longer distance than across the Dumbarton bridge and would take you some time depending on the time of day.
