I think comparing b-ball and soccer is an apples and oranges
comparison within the US.
If we're just talking toughness, I'll take the demographics of our top b-ball players (low income, inner city, minority) over that of our top soccer players (upper middle class, white).
Definitely agree on your last point, and it's changing from what I've seen.
