What I've learned, sadly, is that if it's not in writing, it means nothing.

When I joined my company I was promised xy&z. When none of that came to fruition and I brought it up, I was asked to review my contract and see if I was actually promised xy&z. My bad.

If it's not in writing, they have no obligation to give it to you.
