because they're retiring #6. If I remember correctly, Matt Berry was wearing #8 when they retired Steve Young's jersey and he was able to finish his career in that number. Seems like they would do the same here, or am I remembering that wrong?

Bronco changed that policy. Nobody has worn 9, 14, etc. once they were retired.
