Priority 1a catch, 1b get out of bounds
if you only do one of those you fail, although BYU did have 1 time out, regardless, doesn't change the priorities.

On a comeback, you plant your foot first, then turn your hips as you come back to the ball and align your shoulders and hips 90 degrees to the angle of the ball.

That should give you all the separation you need if the ball is thrown on time to the right spot.

Having said that, getting that kind of timing/accuracy down, even in practice, is pretty difficult, 1/10th of a second is the difference between a completion and a pass break up on that play, and that pattern / throw was about as good as you can ask for in a game, I would take that level of execution all day as a coach, but I am sure either the route or the throw were off by a couple tenths of a second, sadly that is all it takes sometimes to lose a game, and when it is the pivotal play, it turns a mole hill into a mountain.

There are plenty of mountains to complain about in that game before I would be very critical of that single play, and I would tell Tanner to shake that off and play with that same level of execution every play and the team would be successful if that could be sustained, perfection isn't a realistic expectation at game speed.
