In my mind, it remains to be seen whether conferences and schools will be able to maintain the exorbitant amount of TV cash income that they are currently receiving. Schools like Utah and Oregon State surely do not command the same TV audience nationally that the LSU's and Texas's of the world do, or even BYU for that matter. At what point will the "big" schools be tired of leech schools riding on their coattails, and do something not unlike BYU or Notre Dame?
My prediction on this front is that, if football continues as an university sponsored sport (due to health concerns), the definition and application of "conferences" will drastically change, and "conferences" will simply exist for scheduling purposes and nothing more. In this context, a "conference" could even be synonymous with a division in college football (see FBS, or even P5 vs G5 There will be no more revenue sharing, especially when the internet allows every school to have a voice in the communication spectrum.
