$100 + $1000 don't equal $2500. That's the point of conferences.
So let's say Michigan and Ohio State are on par with Notre Dame, right? Similar number of national fans, similar number of national titles, similar success. At least they're within a few million dollars of each other, when it comes to what TV would pay them. But according to your logic, Indiana and Purdue and Northwestern and Illinois should be dragging Michigan and Ohio State down below Notre Dame's number (because Notre Dame is a $1000 team like OSU and Michigan, but Indiana and Purdue are $100 teams).

So if you're right, where's what the math looks like:

Big 10:
Michigan - $1000
OSU - $1000
Nebraska - $1000
MSU - $1000
Wisconsin - $1000
Penn St. - $1000
the other 8 teams - $800
Total- $6800. Divide that by 14 schools, that's like $485 each, but Notre Dame (all on their own) still gets their $1000. So if we look at the TV deal, Notre Dame should be making double the Big 10's deal, right? Here's the actual numbers:

Notre Dame: $15 million per year
Big 10: $31 million per year

Now the Big 10's is for football and basketball, but they're making more than double what Notre Dame is making, so even if basketball inventory is worth the same as football (and we all know it's not), that's still Notre Dame losing money.

So the math actually works out like this:

Good schools - $6000
Bad/Average schools - $800
Value of buying a giant package instead of individual schools separately - $20000
Total - $26800. Divide that by 14 schools, and you get $1900 per school (which approximately matches the ND/Big 10 discrepancy above). The conference is worth more than double what its best individual schools are worth, so there's no real threat that Michigan or OSU or USC or UCLA are going to leave to go independent. Without that threat, they won't be able to bully the other schools into accepting unequal revenue sharing. Texas is the only threat to go independent, and it's because they like pushing people around, not because they'll make more money.
