Growing up in NorCal, in the 80s, I felt that being LDS was respected
Much more than it seems to be today by kids at school, teachers, parents etc. A lot of the athletes, class leaders, best students etc were mormon and people generally seemed to respect and appreciate our values. Never had anyone call me out or ridicule my beliefs, or if they did it was very minor. Many of our teachers/coaches would openly and privately praise the lds kids for being hard workers and productive. I remember a couple of teachers that were into sports positively mention byu during class (in the Ty Detmer glory days). In fact, we had pregame prayer in the locker room before games and if a local pastor wasn't available, the coach would often call on a Mormon kid to offer the prayer. Cool stuff.

We also had about 15 high school kids join the church during about a 5 yr span.

Times seem a little different now. I miss those days and wish our current kids could grow up in a similar environment.
