One game is one game. Florida State was epically futile against Michigan (except for the pick-6s), and they were supposed to be competitive for the Playoff. It happens. It sucks.
I don't think BYU is as good as LSU. I don't think BYU is that good most years. But I don't think BYU is worse than the middle of the SEC, to say nothing of the Big 12, etc. The on-field performances seem to support that.

You have to take the statement in context. The context is competing with P5 schools as an independent is not sustainable
