Spread vs. Pro-style

In a recent conversation with a coach I gained more understanding about the two offenses. Colleges are often more inclined to go with spread offenses because you can have five guys out in routes and you are almost guaranteed to get mismatches because teams won't have as many quality DBs to stay up with the WRs and TEs. All they need is a little space on a mismatch and the QB can release the ball quickly since man coverage is often required. The DBs can't jam the receivers because they have to allow a cushion.

He stated that the Pro-style is designed to create space because the DBs in the pros can cover man much better. The pros will run this offense because the players have to find their space on quality DBs, but every play is designed to succeed against whatever defense is thrown against it. Or, the WR or TE can shield the defender from the ball and the QB is better at finding the small opening or the seam. In order to run the pro-style offense he stated the importance of having the right players in each of the skill positions. BYU isn't there, yet. Detmer wasn't left with any significant skill players at WR and RB, and the QB has to be able to read the defense when he steps to the line, thereby knowing which call or hot route has the best chance to succeed. Tanner can do this with time, but he started out with such challenges in LSU and Utah. Tough Ds with quality DBs. BYU does have Tulutao and Bushman who have the ability to succeed at their respective positions. Tanner can succeed.

I have confidence in Kalani and Ty and think that if they are given time (at least two more years), we will see these things come to pass. I fully understand the frustration with our current offensive production but with time and experience the pieces will be in place. They weren't left with quality depth at RB and WR as is evidenced by what we have seen thus far this year.
