I'm sure that if you crunch the numbers, the odds of scoring a TD there (when you're on the 3), getting a 2-point conversion, recovering an on-sides kick, getting into field goal range, and kicking a field goal are much higher than kicking a field goal, getting a 2-point conversion, recovering an on-sides kick, and then driving all the way for a TD. Just because the first possibility in the second set of required results has a higher likelihood of success than the first possibility in the other set of required results doesn't mean that that's the right decision.
