My first BYU game was at Utah State in 1958. They lost as expected 14-7. Hal Kopp and then LaVeff Edwards brought BYU football to respectability after those dark years. LaVell chose the right people and got out of their way. With the qualification being active LDS, outside of Whittingham, Nuimatlolo, and possible Christiansen at Stanford, we have had no choice but to grow with our coaches. Not being able to hire established head coaches and to some extent coordinators, we are forced to allow them on the job training and hope they work out. They are all good people. They just need experience. We hope they work out!
