Are you not what you do the majority of the time?
Here's the numbers:
From 2011 through to 2020, 49 of 127 games or 38% (including bowls in past seasons) were played against P5 teams. So, 62% of the time we're playing G5 teams. Across that same span, we're averaging 4.9 P5 games per season.
I get both sides of the argument, I really do. No one wants to take a step backwards, whether perceived or actual. But, look at the numbers... we're closer to G5 than we are to P5, like it or not. If we played an 8-game AAC conference schedule we could in theory still schedule 4 games against P5s per year (if we were so bold at the start of each season) - dropping that P5 percentage from 38% to 33%. Not a big difference, making it hard from a numbers standpoint to argue with those who advocate reaching out to the AAC. Now, if Holmoe wasn't committed to scheduling at least 3 if not 4 P5 games to start every year then my point breaks down and I too wouldn't be interested in AAC membership.
Bottom line though, we're G5 most of the time. P5 teams are playing about 75% (or more) of their games against other P5 teams... a percentage we are nowhere near. So, Mr. Holmoe, either up the P5 percentages (against reasonable teams please) a bit, or face the facts and at least get us in a situation where there's meaning to be found after 2-3 losses. Numbers never lie.
And yes, there is money to consider. But again, when it comes to P5 money... we're even less close at this point.
Go ahead and tear me limb from limb as you will.
