predictability was the route that Anae chose at BYU. Keep it simple for the QB..
...and easy for the team to execute. It worked fine against the UNLV's and Wyomings of the day but we tended to struggle against p5 defenses or against smart HC's/DC's like Whittingham or Gary Patterson who's defensive players often knew what we were doing and who we were going to throw to before we snapped the ball (ie Paul Kruger).

One thing that can help counter the predictability is a QB who can throw accurately and to a spot in anticipation of where a WR will be when he breaks thereby not giving the DB a chance to jump a route. In 2006 we had the unique situation of having an experienced QB with an above average NFL arm who wasn't afraid to throw to a spot before the WR made his break and had the arm strength to get it there quickly. That game vs TCU in '06 by Beck is such a thing of beauty because he was nails and on the money despite really tight coverage by some really good athletes.

Max Hall certainly had the intelligence to make those throws but not the arm to make all of them. We haven't really seen much of that since Max left and mostly have had QB's who hold on to the ball until WR's finish their routes and scramble to get open (Nelson, Taysom and Tanner). This requires your OL to hold blocks impossibly long. If our QB's could learn to throw on time and to the right guy like Beck did (took him until his senior year to really master it) they wouldn't get hit so much and we'd have fewer injuries to our QB's and our offense would be harder to stop.
