Learned some things recently...
From an important and connected source. Better source than a player and better source than admin. This person is on the sideline every game and with the team every day in a meaningful way.

This isn’t highly surprising. Just passing along for those interested.

- Although KS won’t use as excuse, the coaches are mystified at how to deal with all the injuries. The injuries have decimated, and almost destroyed this team. The strength and conditioning program is under evaluation but addressing it will likely be after the season.

- Program concern that the offensive staff does shockingly very little internal talent evaluation, capability assessment, and self scouting. Like how high school runs practice. It is basically just show up and try to execute plays better. Very little personnel overhaul, or creative personnel decisions for exploiting matchups. It is just “run it” philosophy with whomever is there to line up. Last 2 weeks have stirred up much more expansive offensive mindset. Legit staff questioning on which offensive is right for BYU. And, there is not tight consensus.

- Program is struggling with one of our main QBs. Team doesn’t respond well to him, his performance, and his quirks. Creates major leadership vacuum. This, along with injuries, has led to leadership problems on the team. QB alternative #2 is the answer (performance and leadership), but injured. So, no reps or chance to do it.

- The same problem (above) exists with a few other key positions. In some positions, the starter is the most talented, but lacks leadership, and trust from others. Alternatives bring even worse trade offs, like being too soft to win reps, or understanding of assignments. Coaches have few good choices simply due to talent. Depth is hyper poor and made disastrous due to injuries.

- Coaches are trying to stay positive and will not give up. Working tirelessly to maximize. But, they are playing with a partial deck. Extreme.

My take always:

- Add up the dynamics above and it is easy to see the results. Not all of it controllable.

- It is made worse by some of the coaches and their experience and tendencies.

- The chemistry is jacked up. Player chemistry is being held together by a thread by coaches and a few great players (I.E. Fred is a stud).

- Program feels like some of all this truly is bad luck and that they inherited some of it (this concerns me, because—losing aside—the chemistry seems to have gone backwards from last year).

- KS gets it along with “most” of the coaches. The depth issue is becoming a near death experience for all because they want to win now. They are working very hard on recruiting (finding new and preserving existing).

- There is enough coaching talent to fix this, but not without major upgrade in player talent and depth. Some coaches needs to change.

- Hoge is the hope for future. Different team with him at the helm.
