Here is my theory and I don't think it's too crazy. Kalani was never actually a good defensive mind. He is an
excellent recruiter. Kyle knew this and valued Kalani's ability to seal the deal with recruits over his Xs and Os ability. Kyle knew that he could micromanage the defense and achieve the result he wanted. That's exactly what happened. As soon as he left Utah, things began to fall apart for him. His OSU defense was abysmal. Luckily for him, this position came open at the perfect time. He could pretend that his woes at OSU were personnel related and that his time at Utah is really indicative of his ability as a coach.

Now you have two unproven coordinators and a HC that cannot effectively instruct either of them in terms of how to do their jobs. I don't see a way to fix this dumpster fire apart from a total overhaul at this point.
