Facts vs Speculation vs Complete Ignorance

CB reached its melting point after UMASS and the mob mentality is flourishing. Let's separate what we know from what we don't know.

Things we know:

1. We suck. Our defense is ok. Our offense is horrible.

- We are 3-9. We lost to UMASS ECU, USU, and Fresno State. We weren't even remotely competitive against LSU, Wisconsin, Boise State, or Mississippi State.

- Offensive rankings (129 teams): 106th in 3rd down conversion pct, 125th in 4th down conversion pct, 111th in completion percentage, 120th in passing efficiency, 113th in rushing offense, 122nd in total offense, 116th in time of possession, 115th in first down offense, 122nd in red zone offense, 123rd in turnovers lost

- Defensive rankings (129 teams): 85th in 3rd down conversion defense, 96th in 4th down defense, 0 defensive defensive TDs, 110th in 1st down defense, 53rd in red zone defense, 58th in rushing defense, 102nd in team passing efficiency defense, 117th in team sacks, 120th in tackles for loss, around 70th in turnover gained, total defense 56th

- Collective rankings: 24th in fewest penalties per game, 115th in turnover margin

So ignoring special teams, it looks like our best stats as a team are: penalties per game (24th), red zone defense (53rd), rushing defense (58th), and total defense (56th). So I think it's safe to say that our defense is the more successful unit on this team.

2. We have suffered A LOT of injuries to key positions.

- At QB, Tanner Mangum started three games and then was injured at the end of the Utah game. In came Hoge, played one full game and was injured in the Utah State game. In came Koy Detmer and was in for the rest of the Utah State game. Then we got Mangum back for 5 games and lost Mangum again in the Fresno State game. Hoge finished out the game for us I think. Then back to Critchlow for two games. That's 4 QBs in one season. The biggest span we had with one QB was 5 games.

- At RB, we had injuries with Squally, Ula, Kavika, and Hall. There was very little consistency at the position. Look at who got the bulk of the carries per game:

PS - Squally w/ 16, Kavika w/ 7

LSU - Squally w/ 5, Kavika w/ 3

Utah - Kavika w/ 8, Ula w/ 5

Wiscy - Ula w/ 13

USU - Ula w/ 21 (and what like 5 fumbles?), Squally w/ 12

BSU - Ula w/ 9, Squally w/ 8

MSU - Ula w/ 8, El-Bakri w/ 5

ECU - Ula w/ 15, Hall w/ 9

SJSU - Squally w/ 10, Hall w/ 10, Burt w/ 6

Fresno - Squally w/12, Bakri w/ 5

UNLV - Squally w/ 25

UMass - Squally w/ 11, KJ w/ 8

- At TE we lost MLP, Balderree, and Marshall (?)

- On defense, maybe you guys can help me but we lost Fred for some games, Butch, Troy, Tonga, Hadley... others?

3. We have a terrible amount of inexperience at receiver

Last season, ONE of our TDs came from receivers currently on our roster (Trinnaman). Balderree had 2 (injured), Marshall had 1 (injured?), and MLP had 2 (injured). We are relying on players who we have never relied on in the past for production. A talking point before the season was that none of our receivers are household names but that they will be. That held true for Bushman.

4. Tanner Mangum had a 136 passer rating in 2015 and a 111 passer rating in 2017.

Tanner Mangum regressed this season vs last season, but he also had a lot less experience and production around him. So is the drop in his rating significant enough to blame on Ty as a QB coach?

Things we don't know:

- Are their other realistic coaching candidates out there who would have achieved significantly greater results with the injuries and receiver inexperience? Could those coaches have developed our inexperienced receivers and our backups better?

- We don't know what the practice structure actually looks like.

- We don't know what players are doing with their free time, how much film they are watching, etc.

- We don't really know what the "culture" is like, how culture is defined, how culture is shaped, and how it's affecting play on the field or how it's affecting discipline.

- We don't know if the injuries are a fluke or if it's the S&C staff. Most of us don't know what the routine looks like in the first place.

I would hate it if we canned Detmer based on the results of this season without really knowing how much of it was affected by culture from the top, staff that he didn't have control over, QB/WR injuries, bad QB play, inexperience at receiver, etc. I would hate it even more if we get an OC like A Rod and we see improvement next year b/c we have less injuries, more TE options, WAY more experience at receiver, an experierenced and in shape Ula, a senior Squally, etc. and then after then a few years down the road we realize that A Rod wasn't really the answer.

I wonder if Holmoe even has the answers to the things we don't know. Even he might need another year to observe and figure out what needs to change. Is it all on Kalani and the structure/culture that he has created? Is it on injuries and the S&C staff? Is it on Detmer and his inability to manage the physical and mental development of his players? Is it all of the above? As much as I would love to see significant changes, I think the best move is to let it play out for another year. I wouldn't be opposed to a few position coach changes.

I do want to see some accountability from the current coaches though on what they plan to change next year - practice structure, scheme, S&C strategy, etc.
