We need a coach that can establish and define a culture. Bronco’s stern affect
was an asset in this regard. You have to have a rock solid foundation to your program that you don’t deviate from during tough times, even when you may have made mistakes as a coaching staff, are dealing with major injuries, or other significant adversity.

The frustrating thing about the Kalani regime is that it’s been a lot of talk, a lot of love expressed to players and fans, but I don’t see that bedrock cultural foundation that the coaches and players can dig into for strength. It feels like week in and week out, we are chasing our tails. Like a ship without a rudder. Kalani seems very reactionary, grasping at whatever was the latest breakdown, saying that they’ve got to “go watch the film, go back to work and figure it out”. It’s been brutal, like a broken record.

Somehow, we need a team identity and culture that gives our team direction and strength. As painful as some of his slogans were, Bronco in retrospect was a master at this, and time and time again, the team responded. Maybe not with the huge bcs busting season that we all hoped for, but with some really outstanding seasons and a few in which he salvaged decent years out of what could have been disaster (ie 2010, 2014).

So to me, whether or not Kalani can find a way establish a strong undeviating culture of effort and performance is what will dictate his longevity at BYU. Maybe he should get a hold of Bronco’s offseason reading list and give Paul Gustavson a call.
