I agree with Vai that we can't be married to a passing offense.
We are no longer quarterback U and haven't been for 30 years. Too many fans and coaches are stuck in the 80s and think that BYU always needs to be throwing the ball, no matter what.

When BYU started passing the ball in the 70s it was a novelty in college football. Running offenses were the norm and very few teams threw the ball. We achieved a lot of success with that philosophy and won a ton of games during our "glory years" mainly because we were passing the ball when others weren't.

Now everyone is throwing the ball. And they are doing so with better athletes than we ever had. We are living in the passing era. The defensive schemes have also evolved and defenses now know how to defend the pass. In other words, we can no longer thrive by simply dropping back and throwing the ball like we did back in the 70's and 80's.

We need to innovate and adapt and find a new offensive identity; a new niche that will put us ahead of the curve and help us achieve the kind of success that we enjoyed back in our heyday.
