Well, here's the deal:
President Monson loves BYU sports, but he's aged and not attending meetings any longer. President Uchtdorf will attend sporting events for social good will, but c'mon, he's German. He probably doesn't care deeply about BYU sports. President Eyring? He was an academic, but I doubt he's passionate about sports. Elder Oaks is on the Board. I'm not sure if Elder Holland is. Elder Holland would be an enthusiastic supporter of BYU sports, but I'm not sure anybody on the Board would be willing to invest heavily in sports like the big schools do. I think the BOT sees the cards are stacked against us with Utah going to the PAC while we were left behind. There was once a verbal agreement (probably 30 years ago) between BYU and Utah that the two schools would always stick together in terms of conference affiliation. But I can't blame Utah for jumping ship. I just don't think the BOT is psychologically ready to invest the kind of money that college sports requires now when we're not going to get a fair shake in the current political/politically correct climate of things.

Finally, there is the recent discontinuation of sports at BYUH. That's not a good sign. I also think the BOT would feel awkward about a coach in Provo making a $4 million salary and assistants making close to a million dollars each. BYU doesn't like to make celebrities through high salaries. I think the BOT feels it would be incongruent with BYU's mission so spend money like that on sports. Now you can complain about the investment years ago for the downtown SLC revitalization project (which I get) and the recent $35 million expenditure for the Book of Mormon printer's manuscript (which I don't get--even if church money wasn't spent). But the writing is on the wall. If BYU can't make it big on a limited sports budget, I'm not sure the BOT cares, notwithstanding anything positive Tom Holmoe has said about the future of BYU sports. He has to say what he does.
