You can also tell by WHERE they pass the ball to.
So many players pass the ball only to guys who they think are already in a position to shoot. They miss the point that sometimes you are making the pass that comes before the pass that comes before the assist. Multiple passes, getting the defense out of position and requiring them to move so that you can get the ball to the spot where you DO want the shot to come from.

I'm a tall guy who rarely shoots 3's. So I'll play with guys sometimes who won't pass me the ball unless I'm on the block already. They don't realize that passing it to me on a wing or elbow can force the defense to adjust and help them get open so that I can pass it back for an open shot or a cutting teammate.
