Do you consider Gary Sheide to be an all time great BYU quarterback?
Was he Lavell's first great QB? He usually gets left out of the discussion. His passing numbers seem rather pedestrian by today's standards; (he never passed for more than 2400 yards in a single season.) However I'm sure his stats were a lot more impressive back in the early 70's when most teams were not throwing the ball and the predominant offensive philosophy in college football was 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

Sheide was never an All American, but he did lead BYU to their first WAC championship under Edwards and he also helped BYU reach their first Bowl game which was huge. He also helped us get our first victory over Arizona State.

I thinks he belongs in the conversation with the other greats. He helped pioneer the passing game for BYU and paved the way for Nielsen, Wilson, McMahon, Young and Bosco along with the other great quarterbacks that would follow.
